Strategic Planning 1-2-3

November 2019 | 2 minute read

We work with a lot of entrepreneurs building very successful businesses. Often when we begin our conversations, we find them dealing with daily/weekly urgent problems or ideas and they are pushing through just to survive. In our experience, this is a normal place to be for many organizations – especially during the first 3 years of starting a business. During this time, entrepreneurs are simply trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t! Suddenly around year 3 it all becomes too much. All decisions, sales, oversight and investment of time begin to overwhelm the entrepreneur and they begin to wonder how to stop fighting the daily fires!

If you are finding yourself turning into a “fire-fighter” it’s a good indication that you need a plan! Here are three simple steps:

1. Set a Vision! Where do you see your company in 3 years? What markets are you in? What do you want your sales to be? What difference do you want to make in your community, this world? Why does the work your organization does matter?

2. Build Alignment! How can you communicate this vision to your team? How will you provide clarity around their impact on the vision? Get everyone excited to be part of something bigger than their daily tasks!

3. Execute the Plan! Set priorities and actions within your goals. Determine who will do what – by when and hold each other accountable. Ownership builds accountability and buy-in.

I hope these three steps provide a good start to think about how you can do this within your own organization. At Summit, we help organizations with all three steps and work through the important – and often messy – process of stopping the firefighting and back to enjoying work, family and community.
